Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor won the Bankipur Assembly by-election on August 3, 2026, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 19,324 votes. The victory ends the BJP's uninterrupted hold on the constituency since 1995 and marks Kishor's maiden electoral win.
What Happened
Counting of votes for the Bankipur Assembly by-election began at 8 AM at AN College in Patna, with 31 rounds of EVM counting scheduled. Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor established a lead early in the counting process and maintained it through all rounds.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the final results were:
| Candidate | Party | Votes Secured |
|---|---|---|
| Prashant Kishor | Jan Suraaj Party | 64,151 |
| Neeraj Kumar Sinha | Bharatiya Janata Party | 44,827 |
| Rekha Kumari | Rashtriya Janata Dal | 14,273 |
Margin of victory: 19,324 votes
Some reports also cited figures of 63,203 votes for Kishor and 44,250 for Sinha, with the margin of victory reported as 18,953 votes. The variation in figures reflects updates during the counting process. The ECI-confirmed final tally stands at 64,151 votes for Kishor against 44,827 for Sinha.
RJD candidate Rekha Kumari finished a distant third with 14,273 votes. A total of 26 candidates contested the by-election.
Voter turnout for the bypoll, held on July 30, 2026, was 34.30 per cent—a decline of more than 7 percentage points from the 41.45 per cent registered in the November 2025 Assembly election.
Official Statement
Bharatiya Janata Party accepted defeat with a formal statement. Bihar BJP State President Sanjay Saraogi said:
"The Bharatiya Janata Party humbly accepts the mandate of the Bankipur by-election and respects the people's decision. In a democratic process, the verdict of the people is above everything! Unlike Opposition parties, we do not blame constitutional institutions, EVMs, or the Election Commission for our defeat. The Bharatiya Janata Party has complete faith in democracy and constitutional systems, and believes in addressing its shortcomings through introspection and review."
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary congratulated Kishor on his victory, stating on X:
"In the grand festival of democracy, the people have chosen Jan Suraaj in the Bankipur Assembly by-election. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Shri Prashant Kishor ji on his victory, while respecting the people's decision."
Prashant Kishor addressed the media following his victory, saying:

"This election is not just about electing an MLA. It is about sending a message to the BJP's top leadership that Bihar deserves a capable CM who can ensure better education and employment opportunities. The people have delivered that message."
He also remarked: "The 30-year fort has collapsed in just 30 days. It has fallen because the people of Bihar now want governments to rise above four-five kilos of free ration and caste politics and work for their children's education and employment."
On his plans for Bankipur, Kishor stated: "My becoming an MLA won't turn Bankipur into Bengaluru, but you will see some improvements happening here over the next two to three months. My first task will be to improve Bankipur with the blessings the people have given me."
Background
The By-Election
The Bankipur by-election was necessitated after Nitin Nabin, the sitting BJP MLA, resigned from the seat in March 2026 following his election to the Rajya Sabha. Nabin had been appointed BJP national working president in December 2025 and became the party's national president in January 2026.
BJP's Unbroken Hold Since 1995
Bankipur—formerly known as Patna West—had been a BJP stronghold since 1995, never lost by the party in any election. The constituency was effectively the political fiefdom of one family:
- Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha (late father) represented the seat for multiple terms
- Nitin Nabin (son) won the seat five consecutive times from 2010 onwards
In the November 2025 Assembly election, Nabin had won Bankipur by a massive margin of over 50,000 votes.
Candidate Changes
The BJP's original nominee, Abhishek Kumar Sinha, withdrew from the contest at the last moment after filing his nomination papers. Sources linked the decision to allegations against his father in the fodder scam. The party subsequently fielded Neeraj Kumar Sinha, a youth wing leader, at short notice.
Pre-Poll Controversy
Hours before counting began, Prashant Kishor accused Patna Police of attempting to influence the election. He claimed campaign workers were illegally detained and voters were intimidated, and stated his party would approach the Election Commission and the Supreme Court over the alleged irregularities. Kishor also claimed police had detained more than 16 party leaders and workers.
Why It Matters
End of a Three-Decade BJP Bastion
The Bankipur result marks the first time since 1995 that the constituency has slipped from the BJP's hands. For a party that had held the seat comfortably for over 30 years—and for Nitin Nabin personally for five consecutive terms—the defeat represents a significant political setback.
Jan Suraaj Party's First Electoral Victory
The victory gives Jan Suraaj Party its first-ever Assembly seat since its formation in October 2024. This comes barely nine months after the party failed to win any of the 238 seats it contested in the November 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
Kishor's Successful Electoral Debut
Prashant Kishor, who spent over a decade as a political strategist for multiple parties including the BJP, Congress, and Trinamool Congress, has now successfully transitioned from strategist to elected representative.

Message to BJP Leadership
Kishor framed the result as a message to the BJP's central leadership about the need for "better leadership" in Bihar. Political observers also note that the result could reshape political narratives and is being viewed as a verdict on Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary's government.
Broader Implications
The BJP also lost the Datia Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh on the same day, with Congress candidate Kuwar Ghanshyam Singh defeating BJP's Ashutosh Tiwari. The party, however, retained the Manjalpur seat in Gujarat. The twin defeats in Bankipur and Datia are being seen as significant blows to the BJP in two party-ruled states.
Fan and Political Reactions
Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Kishor, saying the BJP had "just lost its president's seat".
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien described Kishor's victory as the "beginning of the end" for the BJP.
Jan Suraaj Party posted on X: "In democracy, the fortress belongs only to the people. Thank you, Bankipur—this is your victory."
Celebrations broke out at the Jan Suraaj Party headquarters and outside the counting centre at AN College in Patna, with supporters dancing and distributing sweets.
What's Next
Prashant Kishor will take oath as the MLA from Bankipur, marking his formal entry into the Bihar Legislative Assembly. He has stated that his first priority will be developmental work in Bankipur over the next two to three months.
The victory establishes Jan Suraaj as a significant political force in Bihar, challenging the long-standing dominance of both the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan. Whether this translates into broader electoral success for the party in future elections remains to be seen.
The bypoll result also raises questions about the BJP's organisational strength in the absence of strong local leadership.
